Now that the dust has settled on the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft, SchoolSports.com takes a look at some of the biggest surprises and interesting tidbits on the high school players selected.

Before this season started, Williamsport High (Md.) RHP Nick Adenhart figured to be a Top 10 selection in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft. Adenhart, who's rated the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2004 by SchoolSports.com, owned a pitching repertoire that included a 95 mph fastball, a curve and a changeup.

However, he tore a ligament in his right elbow last month and is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery this month. As a result, Adenhart's hopes for being a high first-round pick in yesterday's draft went as quickly as one of his fastballs. He ended up falling to the 14th round, where the Anaheim Angels drafted him with the 413th overall selection.

Adenhart has signed with the University of North Carolina and will most likely pitch for the Tar Heels rather than go the pro route after he's done recovering from surgery, according to Williamsport head coach Rod Steiner.

Adenhart earned his second straight Gatorade State Player of the Year award this season after going 5-1 with a 0.91 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 38.1 innings pitched before he suffered the injury. He was still able to DH during the playoffs for Williamsport and led the Wildcats to the Class 1A state finals by batting better than .400.

News & Notes:

Adenhart wasn't the only top prep prospect to drop in the draft. Milton High (Ga.) OF Dexter Fowler and Villa Park High (Calif.) RHP Mark Trumbo were both rumored to be potential first-round picks in the days leading up to the draft. Instead, Fowler was picked in the 14th round (410th overall) by the Colorado Rockies, while Trumbo lasted until the 18th round (533rd overall), where he was scooped up by Anaheim. …

Tomball High (Texas) LHP Troy Patton and Henry County High (Ga.) LHP Michael Rozier were viewed as two of the top high school left-handers in the country entering the draft. But Patton wasn't drafted until the ninth round (274th overall) by the Houston Astros and Rozier was picked in the 12th round (365th overall) by the Boston Red Sox. …

Apopka High (Fla.) OF Mike Taylor and Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) RHP Andy Gale are the only Top 10 prep prospects who were not selected in the first 30 rounds of the draft. Taylor is rated the No. 5 overall prospect in the Class of 2004 by SchoolSports.com, while Gale is rated No. 9. …

When Wolfson High (Fla.) teammates Billy Butler and Eric Hurley were both drafted in the first round yesterday, they became only the fifth set of high school teammates in history to earn first-round selections. Butler, a first baseman, was selected No. 14 overall by the Kansas City Royals, while Hurley, a right-handed pitcher, was drafted No. 30 by the Texas Rangers.

Other high-profile high school teammates who were selected include 3B Eddie Prasch (third round, Pittsburgh) and Dexter Fowler (14th round, Colorado) of Milton High (Ga.) and LHP Gio Gonzalez (supplemental round, Chicago White Sox) and OF Christian Marrero of Monsignor Pace High (20th round, Atlanta). …

Through the first 30 rounds, the Milwaukee Brewers had drafted the most prospects rated in the SchoolSports.com Top 50 with four. The Brewers selected Mt. Ararat High (Maine) RHP Mark Rogers, rated the No. 22 prospect, in the first round; Trimble Tech (Texas) RHP Yovani Gallardo, rated the No. 42 prospect, in the second round; Dakota Ridge High (Colo.) LHP Drew Bowman, rated the No. 23 prospect, in the 21st round; and East Islip High (N.Y.) RHP Brian Johnson, rated the No. 27 prospect, in the 30th round.
