For the next two months, SchoolSports.com will rank the Top 10 recruiting classes for the Class of 2004, spotlighting a different college each week. To recap, we ranked USC at No. 1 and Miami at No. 2. Now it's on to No. 3

No. 3 LSU

LSU head coach Nick Saban has done a masterful job in rebuilding the Tigers football program since taking over on Nov. 30, 1999. All Saban has done at LSU is lead the Tigers to a 39-13 mark and three bowl victories in four years, including a 21-14 win over Oklahoma in this past season's BCS title game to finish as co-national champions with USC.

Thanks to his team's achievements on the football field, Saban has enjoyed considerable success in recruiting every year at LSU and this year was no different. The Tigers picked up five Top 100 football recruits from the Class of 2004 as well as many other talented players to finish with the nation's No. 3 recruiting class.

Leading the way for the Tigers' recruiting class are Palm Bay High (Fla.) WR Xavier Carter and St. Martinville High (La.) WR/QB Early Doucet.

Carter is rated the No. 9 overall recruit in the Class of 2004 by SchoolSports.com. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder finished his senior season with 33 catches for 618 yards and nine touchdowns. He's also one of the nation's top sprinters and is a track and field All-American.

Meanwhile, Doucet is arguably the most athletic player in the Class of 2004. The 6-foot-2, 206-pounder, who's rated the nation's No. 10 recruit by SchoolSports.com, starred at quarterback at St. Martinville High, but is projected to play wideout for the Tigers.

Last season, Doucet finished with 782 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns, completed 30-of-62 passes for 615 yards and eight touchdowns and caught nine passes for 166 yards and three scores. He finished his career with 7,104 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Adding to LSU's recruiting class on the offensive side of the ball is Denton High (Texas) OL Herman Johnson, who's rated the No. 29 overall recruit in the Class of 2004 by SchoolSports.com. The 6-foot-7, 325-pounder didn't allow a sack his senior season.

LSU also snagged two Top 100 defensive players in West Jefferson High (La.) DL Marlon Favorite and West Monroe High (La.) LB Luke Sanders.

Favorite, who's rated the nation's No. 48 overall recruit by SchoolSports.com, posted 104 tackles, 26 tackles for loss and 14 sacks his senior season after recording 105 tackles, 35 tackles for loss and 20 sacks as a junior.

Sanders earned Class 5A All-State honors this past year with 100 total tackles (including 78 solo), five interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, five fumble recoveries and seven pass breakups. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder is rated the No. 100 overall recruit in the Class of 2004 by SchoolSports.com.

Other top recruits include Barbe High (La.) OL Ryan Miller, East Ascension High (La.) DL Glenn Dorsey and Evangel Christian (La.) FB Jacob Hester.

Check back in next week as SchoolSports.com unveils the No. 4 football recruiting class in the Class of 2004.
